# 4G vs LTE: Is There Actually a Difference? > In ordinary use they mean the same thing. The technical distinction is real but historical, and none of it changes which travel plan is worth buying. "4G" and "LTE" are mostly marketing for the same thing.* For any practical purpose they are the same thing. If your phone shows 4G and someone else’s shows LTE on the same network, you have the same connection and a different labelling convention. No decision you make should turn on which word appears. There is a real technical distinction underneath, and it is worth one section because it explains why the words drifted apart in the first place. It is history, not a buying guide. ## Where the two words came from 4G was a target, not a technology. The ITU defined a set of performance requirements called IMT-Advanced, and in 2010 it assessed candidate technologies against them. Two were [accorded the IMT-Advanced designation](https://www.itu.int/net/pressoffice/press_releases/2010/40.aspx): LTE-Advanced and WirelessMAN-Advanced. Note the word Advanced. Plain LTE — the thing carriers had already been deploying and advertising as 4G — was not among them. [3GPP recorded the same decision from the Chongqing meeting](https://www.3gpp.org/news-events/3gpp-news/itu-r-confers-imt-advanced-4g-status-to-3gpp-lte), describing its accepted submission as LTE Release 10 and beyond. So for a period the marketing ran ahead of the standard. The industry settled it the way these things usually get settled: everyone kept saying 4G, and the meaning of the word moved to match. The ITU now writes it that way itself — [its IMT FAQ calls IMT-2000, IMT-Advanced, IMT-2020 and IMT-2030 the things the market calls 3G, 4G, 5G and 6G](https://www.itu.int/en/itu-r/documents/itu-r-faq-imt.pdf). ## What the indicator on your phone means Less than people assume. The label is chosen by the phone and the carrier, not by a standards body, and the same connection can be labelled differently on two handsets: - LTE and 4G — the same network, differently labelled. - LTE-A, 4G+ or LTE Advanced — carrier aggregation, meaning several frequency bands used at once. Genuinely faster. - 5G — a different technology, and sometimes slower than a good LTE connection depending on band and congestion. - 3G, E or GPRS — an actual downgrade, and worth noticing because it means something is wrong or coverage is poor. > **Note:** Do not read the indicator as a speed. It reports the technology the phone has attached to, not what that connection is currently delivering — a congested LTE-A cell in a stadium will be slower than plain LTE in an empty village. If speed is your question, the answer is congestion and signal strength, not the label. ## Why none of this affects a travel plan A travel eSIM roams onto whatever local network the provider has an agreement with, and you get whatever technology that network offers where you are standing. The plan does not select 4G or 5G; the tower does. What a plan can affect is being deprioritised as a visiting device at busy times, which produces a slow connection with a perfectly healthy-looking indicator. That is a [throttling and congestion question](https://esimradar.com/blog/data-throttling) rather than a generation question. ## When the label is worth acting on One case: if it drops to 3G, E or GPRS and stays there. That is not a labelling curiosity, it is a symptom — poor coverage, a band your phone does not support, or a line that has fallen back after a failed attach. It is also a shrinking safety net. Those older networks are being switched off country by country: the UK’s operators have been shutting down 3G and, on [the government’s telecoms modernisation timeline](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/telecommunications-modernisation-connectivity-timeline), are scheduling 2G retirement from 2029. Where that has happened there is no slow fallback left to drop to, only no service. In everyday use, yes. Strictly, the ITU designated LTE-Advanced rather than plain LTE as meeting its 4G criteria in 2010, but the word has long since shifted to cover both. ### Is 4G slower than LTE? No — they describe the same connection. Differences in speed come from congestion, signal strength and which bands the network and your phone share. ### Why does my phone show 4G when my friend’s shows LTE?
