# How Does an eSIM Actually Work? > The mechanism behind eSIMs: what a profile is, what the eUICC chip does, and why "downloading a SIM" is a more literal description than it sounds. It authenticates the profile, and that is the whole trick.* A physical SIM is a tiny computer that holds a secret. The secret proves to a network that you are a paying subscriber, and the plastic exists only to get that computer into your phone. An eSIM keeps the computer, permanently soldered in, and delivers the secret over the internet instead. This page is about the mechanism. ## The chip: eUICC The hardware is called an eUICC — an embedded universal integrated circuit card. It is a secure element, the same class of component that stores payment credentials, designed so that what goes in cannot be read back out. None of this is one manufacturer’s invention: it is [a GSMA specification](https://www.gsma.com/solutions-and-impact/technologies/esim/about/), which is why the same profile format works across every phone and every provider. Its useful property is that it holds multiple profiles at once. A physical SIM is one subscription per piece of plastic; an eUICC typically stores eight or more, and how many run at a time is a limit of the phone rather than the chip — [Apple’s Dual SIM page in the iPhone User Guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/use-dual-sim-iph9c5776d3c/ios) puts it at two eSIMs on iPhone 13 and later. That is why you can keep your home line and a travel plan on the same phone without swapping anything. ## The profile A profile is the data a physical SIM would have carried: the subscriber identity, the cryptographic keys that prove it, and the network settings. Downloading one writes exactly that into the eUICC. "Downloading a SIM" is a more literal description than it sounds — the only thing missing is the plastic. Profiles are issued for one device. The eUICC has its own identity, the EID, and the profile is prepared for that specific chip — which is why a QR code generally installs once. Moving a line to a new phone does not copy the profile across: the transfer flows both platforms now offer, such as [Google’s steps for transferring a SIM to a new phone](https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/16115951), have the carrier issue a fresh profile for the new chip, and they only work where the carrier supports it. The code holds an address — an SM-DP+ server — and an activation code. Your phone contacts that server, presents the activation code and its EID, and the server sends back a profile prepared for that chip over an encrypted channel. > **Note:** This is why providers can offer the same thing as a code you type by hand. If a QR scan fails, ask for the SM-DP+ address and activation code and [enter them manually](https://esimradar.com/blog/enter-esim-qr-code-manually) — it is the identical exchange, just without the camera. ## Why activation starts the clock Downloading a profile does not tell the network you have arrived. The plan usually begins when the profile first registers on a mobile network, because that is the first moment the operator sees you consuming anything. That mechanism is what makes "install at home, activate on landing" safe advice on most plans — and why the [minority that start at purchase](https://esimradar.com/blog/activate-esim-abroad) are worth spotting before you buy. ## Why deleting is usually final The secure element is built so credentials cannot be extracted, only installed and erased. There is no copy of the profile to restore from — not in a backup, not on the provider’s side in a form your phone would accept. Reinstating one means issuing a new profile. What differs is commercial: price per GB, how long the plan lasts, whether you can top up, and which local network you actually roam onto. No. The eUICC is a secure element of the same class, and profiles are delivered over an encrypted channel. It is arguably harder to attack, since there is no card to remove from a phone. ### How many eSIM profiles can a phone hold? Typically eight or more stored. How many run at once is a limit of the phone rather than the chip, and it is the one that bites in practice — storage is rarely the constraint. ### What is an EID? The identifier of the eUICC chip itself, distinct from the IMEI. Profiles are prepared for a specific EID, which is why they install on one device.
