Compare the best eSIMs for Italy

The cheapest plan we list for Italy is $0.35. Across 6,757 plans from 94 providers the middle of the market works out at about $1.21 per GB, so anything well under that is a good deal and anything well over needs a reason.

Maps, messaging and a normal amount of scrolling runs well under 2 GB a day; 2 GB a day is a heavy day with video on it. That is also the ceiling our ranking assumes, which is why a 100 GB plan that expires tomorrow does not win. The commonest size on this board is 50 GB, which suits most trips to Italy.

It depends on the plan, and it is the field travellers get caught by. 1,335 of the plans here start counting at first connection, so you can install before you fly; 104 start the moment the eSIM is installed. Every expanded row states which, under “validity starts”.

Not in the way the word suggests. All 1,741 unlimited plans here have a daily high-speed allowance and throttle for the rest of the day once you pass it. Where a provider publishes that cap we show it in the expanded row, because it is the number that decides whether the plan suits you.

On 31% of the plans here. The rest block tethering, which is easy to miss until you need it, so “hotspot” is a filter on the bar above rather than a note in the small print.

Not for data. You need one only for services that verify by SMS on a local number. 21 plans here include one; the rest are data-only, and your own number keeps working for calls and texts because your primary SIM stays in the phone.

1,011 plans here let you top up without buying again. On the rest you buy a new plan, which is worth knowing before picking the smallest bundle to save a couple of dollars.

Any iPhone from XR onward and most Android flagships since 2019. Look for “eSIM” or “Add data plan” in your network settings. If it is there, you are fine. A phone locked to a carrier may refuse an eSIM even if it supports one.

We read every provider’s own public catalogue daily. The 5000 plans on this page were last checked 14 minutes ago, and the pulse at the top of the board for Italy says the same thing in one line.

Yes. A commission when you buy through an outbound link, at no cost to you. It does not change the ordering: the ranking is computed before we know who pays us. What it decides is which plans a page puts forward, namely the “top pick” marker, the labelled partner shelf, and which plans the “Recommended” tab above lists. The other three tabs carry every plan on this page.
